In the heart of Montreal's Rivières des Prairies district, there's a pharmacy that has stood the test of time, thanks to the commitment and passion of five generations of pharmacists. For sixty years, this healthcare institution has been run by remarkable figures in the pharmaceutical field, and today, Catherine Cellini and Philippe Gauvin have the honor of taking up the torch.
The journey back in time begins in the summer of 1955, when the foundation stone of this formidable enterprise was laid. The pharmacy opened at 9689 Boul Gouin Est, under the name "Pharmacie BLAIS". During this period, which lasted until 1961, the establishment devoted itself to providing the surrounding community with the medicines and care it needed.
The second generation, from 1961 to 1966, marked a new era for the pharmacy, which now operated under the name "Pharmacie BLAIS & GAGNON". This collaboration brought new perspectives and opportunities for the establishment, which continued to grow and serve the neighborhood.
The third generation, from 1966 to 1983, saw the rise of the "Pharmacie ANDRÉ GAGNON" banner. Under this leadership, the pharmacy continues to serve the community with dedication, supporting the health and well-being of its residents.
In 2000, the pharmacy took a new turn with a move to new, more spacious premises at 9686 4th Street. This new location, a little more central to the residential neighborhoods, enabled the establishment to get even closer to its customers. It was under the "Pharmacie GAGNON & GIROUX" banner that the fourth generation of pharmacists took over, from 2000 to 2012.
Finally, in 2012, a new page in the pharmacy's history was turned with the arrival of the fifth generation. Catherine Cellini and Philippe Gauvin take up the torch and continue the story of this pharmacy, which has become a veritable institution in the Rivières des Prairies district.
It's important to note that, while care has been taken to record this history, some of the years cited may vary slightly. Nevertheless, one thing remains certain: since 1955, the pharmacy has reinvented itself with each generation, while remaining at the service of the community. It's a story of passion and dedication that continues today, thanks to Catherine Cellini and Philippe Gauvin.
In conclusion, we would like to thank the Société Historique de Rivières des Prairies for the invaluable photos and information that have greatly contributed to piecing together the history of this venerable pharmacy.
Special thanks go to Mr. Pierre Christin, former owner of the building where the pharmacy was originally located. His generosity was invaluable, as he provided a photo of the old pharmacy and the dates that made it possible to retrace its history.
